The base is what decides whether a paver surface lasts or heaves and shifts within a couple of seasons — excavating to the right depth, laying and compacting a gravel base, and screeding a level bedding layer before a single paver goes down. Rushing or skipping that step is the most common reason a paver job looks great for one summer and rough the next.

With the base right, pavers get laid to pattern, cut to fit clean against edges and structures, and finished with joint sand swept in and compacted so the whole surface locks together instead of individual pavers shifting underfoot. Common questions

Why does a paver patio need so much base work before anything is even visible?

Because the base is what stops the pavers from sinking, shifting or heaving later — it's the part of the job you won't see once it's finished, but it's the part that decides whether the patio looks good in five years or needs redoing.

Can pavers go over an existing concrete patio or driveway?

Sometimes, if the concrete is in solid shape and the height change works with doorways and drainage — otherwise it usually needs to come out first. We'll tell you honestly which one your situation calls for once we've looked.
