The base is what makes synthetic grass hold up or fail, and it's most of the work: excavating out the old grass and topsoil, grading for drainage so water doesn't pool underneath, and compacting a base layer the turf sits on evenly. Skip that step or rush it and the turf will show every low spot and soft spot within a year — the base is not the part to cut corners on.

Once the base is right, the turf gets rolled out, seamed so the joins don't show, secured at the edges, and infilled so the blades stand up instead of lying flat. Good installation looks like grass, not carpet — no visible seams, no wrinkles, no soft or spongy spots underfoot, and edges that sit clean against a walkway, fence line or bed.
